What to Expect at Your First Cycle Class at JackHammer Fit

Walking into your first cycle class can feel intimidating, we get it. Most people walking through our doors are wondering the same three things: Will I know what I'm doing? Will I fit in? Is this going to hurt?

So let me walk you through exactly what to expect when you take your first cycle class at JackHammer Fit, so you feel confident before you even walk in the door.

We Properly Fit You on the Bike — Every Time

One of the first things we do when you arrive is fit you to your bike. Seat height, handlebar position, and distance from the bars all matter, and we take the time to set this up correctly so you feel safe and comfortable from your very first pedal stroke.

We also provide cycling shoes to borrow — not rent. Some studios charge for shoes. We don't. We also have a clean towel on each bike before class, and while we suggest you bring water, if you forget we sell water in our studio refrigerator for $1.

That's just part of how we take care of our people.

Our Bikes Face the Mirror — So You Can Learn Proper Form

All of our bikes face the mirror, and that's intentional. You'll learn to watch your form and check in with your body:

  • Shoulders down and back

  • Knees tracking forward — not out

  • Core engaged

  • Smooth, controlled movement

We focus on form first, because good technique keeps you safe and makes your workout dramatically more effective.

We're Old School — And Proud of It

At JackHammer Fit, we focus on strong, intentional riding, not flashy choreography. We're a little more old school, and that means:

  • Smooth transitions between positions

  • Controlled cadence

  • Proper resistance

  • No bouncing wildly on the bike

We use cadence control, which means there is always enough tension on your bike so you stay stable and safe throughout class.

Spinning out of control just to hit a high number on the screen isn't a workout — it can be dangerous. That's not how we do things here.

Every Instructor Has Their Own Style

Even though we share the same strong fundamentals, each instructor brings their own personality to the bike:

  • One instructor is a marathon runner, so her rides focus on endurance and steady strength.

  • Another is a dancer, bringing rhythm and movement to the music, without complicated choreography.

No matter who you ride with, the focus stays the same: strong form, safe movement, solid results.

You Don't Have to Keep Up — Just Keep Moving

This is important to know: you are not expected to keep up your first time. Not even close.

We encourage beginners to:

  • Sit when you need to

  • Take water breaks

  • Move at your own pace

But we always remind you: keep your legs moving. Don't stop completely.

Everyone in that room started exactly where you are right now. And yes — it gets easier. It feels better. And one day, it all clicks.

We Use Weights — But Light and Controlled

During some classes, we incorporate:

  • 2-pound Bala wrist weights

  • 2-pound hand weights

These are used carefully and with proper form, never rushed or sloppy. Again: form first. Always.

What Should You Wear to Cycle Class?

Simple answer: wear what feels comfortable. We recommend:

  • Workout bottoms that fit close to your legs (loose shorts can catch on the bike)

  • A supportive sports bra

  • A tank top, t-shirt, or workout top

We're not about fashion shows here. No one is handing out Best Dressed Awards. Most of us are just happy if our hair is washed a few times a week.

Best advice? Be yourself. Because that's exactly what everyone else here is doing.

"Real people. Real sweat. Zero pretense."

Will the Seat Hurt? Let's Be Honest…

This is one of the most common questions we get:

"Is it going to hurt between my legs?"

Short answer: maybe a little at first.

But most people adjust within a few classes, and we keep seat cushions available if you need one. You'll be okay. We promise.

Some Classes Are More Than Just Cycling

Some of our cycle classes are paired with:

  • Core work

  • Strength training

  • Stretching

Be sure to check the schedule so you know what to expect, or just call or email us and ask. We're happy to help you pick the right class for where you are right now.

We've Got the Comfort Details Covered

We've thought about the small things that make your whole experience better. You'll find:

  • Overhead and floor fans

  • Leather chairs to relax in after class

  • Himalayan salt foot warmers

  • Coffee and good conversation

  • Red light therapy panels

  • Yoga mats and straps for stretching

Many of our clients stay after class for a few minutes to stretch, relax, and chat. That community time matters as much as the workout itself.

You're in Good Hands Here

Our instructors aren't just fitness lovers — they're highly trained professionals. Our team includes:

  • Personal Trainers

  • A Physical Therapist

  • A Massage Therapist

  • A Boston Marathon runner

  • A Division 1 athlete

  • Certified trainers with 20+ years of experience

  • And yes — a Registered Nurse

We're here to help you move safely, feel stronger, and build confidence, one ride at a time.

Ready to Ride?

Your first class isn't about being perfect. It's about showing up. Getting on the bike. Feeling the music. And realizing you're stronger than you thought.

So let's set up your bike, clip in, and get ready to crush some miles, with good music and a room full of people cheering you on.
